Sangiao excited as lockdown nears end in Baguio

With Baguio City transitioning to General Community Quarantine (GCQ) from two months of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao has already made plans if things loosen up.

Sangiao is thankful that they are still safe amid the pandemic, but he is looking forward to the moment when they can return to normal operations.

“I would say that we are very fortunate because we are all doing fine here amid the scary things that we’re seeing with COVID. I pray that we find a cure soon for this pandemic,” Sangiao said.

“I only have one plan after the lockdown and that is to go back to our regular training program and routine. I know they are doing their own training at home but of course, things are different in the gym.”

Sangiao has been making the most of the lockdown by helping the community with their needs while still assisting his team.

“While we’re on lockdown, we just continue training at home, and when needed for social responsibilities, we go out,” Sangiao said.

“Then if there’s a chance, we drop by the gym and train. Whoever can go out and is within the vicinity, sometimes we meet up in the gym to work out and do sauna after.

“I also have more time in managing the social media of the team, one thing that I wasn’t able to do [at the height of] the pandemic.”

Sangiao admits he misses a lot of stuff during the lockdown, but he knows that these are small sacrifices that must be made to contain the virus.

But once all this is over, it is back to business for Team Lakay.

“Like all the others, I miss a lot of things that we used to do before the lockdown – like eating with the team after training. There is a small restaurant near the gym and we often went there for lunch,” Sangiao said.

“That’s a very good restaurant, and it became our bonding. As they say, ‘Good memories and good plans start at the dining table.’

“We might visit the place after the ECQ, but just like what I’ve said, I have only one plan after the lockdown – that is to go back to our regular training program and routine and prepare the athletes for their future battles.”
