Navotas imposes liquor ban amid ECQ

It is now prohibited to buy or consume alcoholic drinks in Navotas.

The Navotas City Government on Monday imposed a liquor ban in all public places within the city for the duration of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Luzon.

Mayor Toby Tiangco issued Executive Order N0. 027 on April 12, which bans “any person, including owners and managers of public markets, stalls, supermarkets, convenience stores and sari-sari stores to sell, furnish, offer, buy, serve or drink liquor in any of the city’s public spaces during the enhanced community quarantine and its foregoing extensions.”

Tiangco said the 24/7 liquor ban seeks to prevent public gatherings and avoid further spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“Some constituents remain stubborn and continue to challenge the practice of social distancing and rules on home quarantine, thinking that drinking sessions among neighbors are a harmless way of passing time,” he said.

“The liquor ban in public places also hopes to dissuade our people from spending the social amelioration fund they will be receiving to buy alcoholic drinks,” he said.

“Violators will be apprehended and charged accordingly while liquors and other intoxicating beverages will be confiscated,” Tiangco added.

There are currently 51 suspected, 46 probable and 14 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Navotas.
