Aric del Rosario, former head coach of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and the University of Perpetual Help Altas, passed away at the age of 80.
Del Rosario had a heart attack while at their home in Quezon City early Thursday morning, and succumbed while undergoing treatment at the Lung Center of the Philippines, according to his son Lester.
He is best known for coaching the Growling Tigers to the men’s basketball in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines back in 1993 via a rare 14-0 sweep.
“Tatay Aric” last handled the Altas in the National Collegiate Athletic Association from 2012 to 2015.
Among his many coaching stints included the Pampanga Dragons in the Metropolitan Basketball Association and the national men’s team in the Southeast Asian Games in 2003.
He is the former commissioner of the NCAA (Philippines) from 2009-2011 and the Fr. Martin Cup.
Coach Aric is survived by his wife Teresa, and his children Eric, Lester, PJ and Michelle, along with his grandchildren.
