The city government of Taguig has distributed the second semester allowances of a total of 3,400 scholars at the Taguig City University.
The allowance received by students from districts 1 and 2 comprising the first batch varies from P7,500 to P50,000.
The financial assistance given under the Lifeline Allowance for Neighbors In-need Scholarship program, is only one of many initiatives of the city government that is proof the local government has education as its top priority.
Every school year, students of Taguig also receive free school supplies and benefit from other services of the probinsyudad.
Just last week, Taguig City passed Ordinance No. 6, Series of 2020 during a special session of the Sagguniang Panlungsod.
This ordinance will continue the city’s existing programs, currently covering 55,000 scholars in tertiary and about 10,000 in high school, and create new scholarship packages covering athletes, students in a select number of fields, and public servants and their families or dependents.
The new ordinance stipulates that the Lifeline Assistance for Neighbors In-need Scholarship Program will remain, together with the other longtime schemes City Educational Assistance Allowance for Taguig City University Scholars and Taguig Learners’ Certificate Scholarship Program.
The city will bankroll the ordinance with a 2020 allocation of P700 million going to scholarships, a significant chunk of the P3-billion budget for education.
Mayor Lino Edgardo Cayetano said TCU students have started receiving financial assistance from the city government, enabled by another ordinance granting students a scholarship allowance each semester and merit incentives for those who excel in academics.
Ordinance No. 08, Series of 2019 provides that all students at Taguig City University would receive P5,000 in educational assistance every semester.
Still under the ordinance, the cream of the crop at TCU can receive an added P5,000 each semester.
An interested TCU student can qualify for the scholarship program if he/she is a bonafide resident of Taguig for at least three years immediately preceding the application; of good moral character; a duly registered voter of the city if the applicant is already 18 years of age and, if not, at least one of his/her parents is a duly registered voter.
For the merit incentive, the Registrar’s Office of TCU will provide the list of regular college students with qualified GWA at the end and before the start of each semester.
The applicants for both grant will be evaluated by the Screening Committee created and authorized by the City Mayor.
The city government is transforming TCU into a university offering quality education. All programs and courses at the city-run university are CHED accredited/recognized. Passing rates for the licensure examination for criminologists, teachers and psychometricians are higher than the average national passing rates.
