Photographer and model-turned-meditation coach and yoga instructor Sara Black recently led a talk on creating “Sacred Spaces” by detoxifying—as in cleaning and decluttering—home using natural products.
Adopting a mindset of minimalism and decluttering physical spaces, she said, have huge payoffs. By decluttering, staying clean and organized, we end up feeling better, becoming more productive, and even fitter.
“We’re holding on to too many things in our home that are not relevant anymore,” stated Black.
Double-duty cleaning products
Black encourages the use of natural cleaning products, which also work double-duty. For instance, Healthy Options’ ECOS Dishmate Free and Clear unscented and hypoallergenic dish soap can clean a “sinkful” of dishes in just a few drops thanks to its concentrated plant-powered cleaning agents. Aside from dishes, it can also be used as hand soap, suitable for people with skin and fragrance allergies.
Speaking of washing dishes, the Natural Value Dual Surface Cellulose Sponge can be used for plates and utensils as well as non-stick surfaces.
Healthy Options’ other natural cleaning items include Ecover Zero Non-Chlorine Bleach, Cadia Free and Clear fabric softener, and Cadia Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar.
Cleaning with essential oils
In lieu of chemical-based all-purpose cleaners, essential oils can be added to inject additional antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal qualities to natural all-purpose cleaners. Peppermint, for example, has antiseptic properties that may help repel ants, spiders, and cockroaches.
To make a natural all-purpose cleaner, mix one-fourth part white vinegar and three-fourth part water with 15 drops of a suitable essential oil. For a basic sink cleanser, combine one-half cup of baking soda with six drops of essential oil like eucalyptus which has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties; or tea tree oil which can fight off nasty bacteria.
Rinse the sink with hot water, sprinkle the combination into the sink, and pour one-fourth cup of vinegar over the top. After the fizz settles, scrub using a damp sponge or cloth and rinse again with hot water.
Filter air with plants
To help filter the air and create a pleasant ambience at home, Black suggested bringing the outdoors in through plants. Choose low-maintenance plants like mint, basil, or rosemary, which are not only fragrant can be used for cooking, too.
