Young star Julia Barretto states that as of now, she prefers not to be part of a love team.
As everyone knows, she was half of the famous JoshLia tandem opposite and former boyfriend Joshua Garcia. During this period, they made the hit potboilers Vince and Kath and James, Love You to the Stars and Back, Unexpectedly Yours and I Love You Hater including the top-rating TV series Ngayon at Kailanman.
But now, after their controversial split-up, it is clear that their love team has already disbanded and they’re now trekking different career paths.
For Julia, it’s no big deal if she doesn’t have a steady screen partner at the moment.
“I guess, I’ve already graduated from that phase in my career. I take it as a positive development since I can presently explore more as an actress,” she avers.
“I’m simply thankful to be entrusted with projects now which are far different from the usual stuff I do. It’s like I’m more free to do some scenes and roles that take more risks. In short, I can now take roles fearlessly. I can be the actress that I’ve always wanted to be,” she adds.
The young actress makes it clear though that she’s not closing her doors on doing rom-com material.
“Please don’t get me wrong. I’m grateful and blessed to have experienced what it’s like to be in a love team. But as I’ve said, I’m already past that stage. I can still appear in ‘kilig’ projects, why not? But this time around, I want to try it in romance dramas or classic love stories. Actually, I still enjoy doing rom-coms but I want my roles to be edgier.”
What can she say about her former screen tandem and steady Joshua?
“Well, I respect whatever choice he has for his career. I can see that he’s now more associated with Janella (Salvador). Their JoshNella has also gained following after they starred in The Killer Bride. That’s nice,” she comments.
Julia explains that she respects Joshua’s choice to still be tied into a love team. But as for her, she’d rather experiment with projects now.
“I’m so happy to be in a phase of my career in which I get to do more mature portrayals and collaborate with other actors, which is vital for my growth as an artist. At least now, I don’t feel that I’m boxed. I can try various genres and experience working with other leading men and directors,” she explains.
Just like in her currently iWant project titled, I Am U, where she is paired for the first time with Tony Labrusca, she is being exposed to a fresh combination.
The series is a psycho-thriller where her character has a doppelganger.
“It’s also the first time that I get to do some daring scenes. The role is quite edgy and challenging. It’s a good material for me and Tony who incidentally I’ll be doing a soap opera with in the coming days.”
Does this mean there’s no possibility that she’ll do a project again with Joshua?
“I don’t say that. It’s still possible but definitely, not now! That’s for the future to know because as of now, I’m working on Julia both as an individual and actress,” ends Julia.

How confident is she with her audition?
“As far as I’m concerned, I did my best! I know that there are lots of other stars who auditioned for Voltes V so I don’t want to expect. Let’s just wait and see who will the management pick,” states Myrtle.
