Now celebrating its 125th anniversary in the Philippines, Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), Inc. has gone “Beyond Lifetimes” in its commitment to helping Filipinos achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives.
The first and longest-standing life insurer in the country, Sun Life has served generations of clients like the Sy family who has, through the years, affirmed their trust in the company.
Seeking a brighter future in the Philippines, Dijo Sy migrated from China and started a new life with his abaca business. Armed with a firm resolve and sheer hard work, Dijo found success and fulfilment in his chosen endeavour.
By the time his eldest son, Eng Chai Sy, was born, Dijo made a lifetime vow to give his children a brighter future. Following his father’s footsteps, Eng Chai grew the family business until World War II broke out. The family was forced them out of their home and what was left of their business was ravaged and destroyed.
After the war, Eng Chai rebuilt his family’s life with his son, Tiong An Sy. As Tiong An became the new head of the family, he felt lost without his father, Fortunately for him, the elder Sy’s legacy made sure that the family was taken care of.
Though Tiong An worked hard to provide for his family, the times were changing. The future seemed uncertain, but he told his family to hold on to hope and everything will be all right.
It was that promise that allowed Benjamin Sy and the rest of the family to make it to the new millennium. That New Year was a celebration of how far they had come as a family, and how much further they could go.
As he looks at his own son, Christopher Sy makes the same promise his family has made ever since, one that is not easy to keep.
Through it all, the Sy family always had Sun Life as a partner to help them keep that lifetime promise – that even in the toughest of times, their family can look forward to a brighter tomorrow.
