Labor group Defend Jobs Philippines on Friday expressed support to Senator Grace Poe’s Senate Bill 1341 that seeks to amend Republic Act 4136 (Land Transportation and Traffic Code) which aims to include motorcycle taxis as public utility vehicles.
Under Poe’s proposed bill, motorcycle taxis will then be defined as “any two-wheeled motor vehicle which is registered with the Land Transportation Office which transports passengers and goods on a for-hire basis, and which may utilize online ride-hailing or pre-arranged transportation platforms.”
Defend Jobs Philippines said that the filing of the Senate Bill 1341 “is a welcome development to the long-drawn struggle for recognition and legitimization of the livelihoods of the existing 30,000-47,000 motorcycle taxis operating under Angkas, JoyRide and MoveIt in our roads nationwide today.”
To date, motorcycle taxis pilot run allowed 63,000 units to serve commuters in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro until March 23.
