The Philippines marks today the 129th anniversary of the martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal that sparked the 1896 Revolution against Spanish colonial rule.
This year’s commemoration carries the theme: “Rizal: Sa Pagbangon ng mga Mamamayan, Aral at Diwa Mo ang Tunay na Gabay,” the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) said.
The following programs and activities will be conducted in various parts of the country, the NHCP said,
4:00 a.m.
Retracing of Rizal’s footsteps from Fort Santiago, Intramuros to Rizal Park Luneta (Manila)
7:00 a.m.
Simultaneous Flag Raising and Wreath-Laying Ceremonies at the:
– Rizal national monument, Rizal Park, Manila
– Museo ni Rizal in Calamba City, Laguna
– Museo ni Rizal in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte
– local Rizal monuments across the country.
9:00 a.m.
– Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Rizal Monument, Plaza de Armas, Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila
– BAKAS: Jose Rizal’s Imprints in the Provinces of the Philippines Exhibit Opening at the Rizal Shrine, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte
10:00 a.m.
Rizal Day Special Lecture: “Si Rizal bilang Gabay sa Pagbangon ng Nasyon” at the Rizal Shrine Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila
1:00 p.m.
Annual Sketchwalk: Art Workshop at the Rizal Shrine Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila

The NHCP said similar activities will also be conducted in Philippine embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions worldwide. Flag-raising ceremonies and the display of the Philippine flag will likewise be observed in various parts of the country.
Dr. Jose Rizal was executed by firing squad in Bagumbayan, now Rizal Park, on December 30, 1896.
