The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is strengthening forest rehabilitation efforts in Central Luzon with the formalization of a multi-sector partnership aimed at restoring 30 hectares of degraded upland forest in Sitio Daing, Barangay Duale, Limay, Bataan.
The initiative marked the official launch of the five-year Puno ng Buhay–Limay Reforestation Project.
It brings together the DENR, the local government unit of Bataan, the municipality of Limay, Petron Foundation Inc. and the Samahang Magsasaka sa Kagubatan Limay Bataan Inc. (SAMASAKA) in a collaborative effort to accelerate ecosystem recovery.
The partnership also creates sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Anchored on DENR’s mandate under Executive Order No. 192, the project supports the National Greening Program by rehabilitating denuded forestlands, protecting critical watersheds and contributing to national climate action through forest restoration and carbon sequestration.
“What will make this project succeed is our shared commitment―national and local government, the private sector and our people’s organizations – working together to deliver concrete results,” DENR Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla said.
The project site lies within the Community-Based Forest Management area of SAMASAKA and will be implemented through a community-led approach. The rehabilitation plan includes the planting of native species, such as fruit-bearing trees, bamboo and timber species to enhance biodiversity and promote ecosystem resilience.
“This watershed project will help improve groundwater recharge and benefit local communities. Though it covers 30 hectares, it reflects our long-term commitment to work with DENR and our partners in Bataan to sustain and expand this effort,” said Petron general manager and chairperson Lubin B. Nepomoceno.
Upon completion of the project term, all improvements and rehabilitated areas will be formally turned over to the DENR to ensure sustained protection and management of the restored forestland.
The Puno ng Buhay–Limay Reforestation Project highlights DENR’s continuing commitment to conserve, protect, and sustainably manage the country’s forest resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
