La Trinidad, Benguet has recorded the lowest temperature yet this 2025 as the mercury dropped to 12.1 degrees Celsius (°C) early Sunday, December 28. This broke the previous season low of 12.4° C on December 4 in the same location.
Other localities that logged temperatures below 20°C included 14.8° Celsius in Baguio City, 18.5°Celsius in Basco, Batanes and 19.7° Celsius in Tanay, Rizal.
The peak of the northeast monsoon or ‘amihan’ season takes place in January and February when temperatures are expected to drop further, especially in high-elevation areas.
State weather bureau PAGASA projects that temperatures in Luzon’s mountainous areas could fall to 7.5°C in January and around 9.2°C in February.
In Metro Manila, the minimum temperatures may dip to 17.4°C in January and 18.5°C in February.
Historically, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the country was 6.3°C in Baguio City on January 18, 1961.
A weakening northeast monsoon is affecting most of Luzon, including Metro Manila, with light rains possible in Batanes and Cagayan. A fresh surge is expected by New Year’s Eve and may persist through the weekend.
From December 28 to 30, the northeast monsoon will bring mostly cloudy skies with rains over Batanes and Cagayan, while the Ilocos Region, the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains.
Meanwhile, the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and CARAGA will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms due to easterlies. The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers due to localized thunderstorms.
From December 31 to January 2, ‘amihan’ will bring mostly cloudy skies with rains over Batanes and Cagayan, while the Ilocos Region and the Cordillera Administrative Region will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains.
The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers due to easterlies or localized thunderstorms.
