Isabela Chess University (ICU) capped a dominant weekend by claiming the overall championship of the Region 2 Chess League, a grueling seven-leg tournament featuring over 20 teams from across the region.
After the league’s seven-leg series, the top eight teams advanced to the quarterfinals, held on December 21, 2025, at New Market, Alicia, Isabela. The knockout stage brought together the region’s elite squads, producing thrilling, closely contested matches.
ICU Team A showcased a flawless performance in the elimination rounds, first defeating CAPCA Team B and then overcoming ICU Team B to secure a spot in the finals. In the championship match, they faced tournament favorites Kidz Chess Club of Tuguegarao City. Demonstrating superior preparation, discipline, and teamwork, ICU dominated the final, claiming a decisive 5.5–1.5 victory.
The championship-winning lineup of ICU Team A included Penelope Kate Sanchez, Davyd Leiniel C. Sigua, Roldio Torres, John Carlo Gauan, Alaine Ibadlit, Dwayne Mesia, and Seth Esteban.
ICU Team B also turned heads, finishing fourth overall despite being considered underdogs. Their strong performance highlighted the depth of talent in the university’s chess program. Team B members included Arbie Obana, Jheryl Ruiz, Jared Keanne B. Cudal, Sebastian James B. Cudal, Anika Caole, Russell Martinez, and Nicos Ibana.
The weekend’s success extended beyond team events. International Master and FIDE Trainer Joel Banawa, ICU’s head coach, captured the Year-End Rapid Championship, scoring an impressive 6.5 out of 7 points. Meanwhile, Naphtali Ruano claimed the Under-17 Rapid Championship, finishing with 6 points out of 7.
