The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is encouraging the public to celebrate the Christmas and New Year holidays responsibly by adopting eco-friendly practices to reduce waste.
The agency reminded Filipinos to practice the 5Rs of waste management—refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle—to minimize the surge of trash typically generated during the festive season.
It reiterated the vital role of local government units in ensuring proper waste management under Republic Act 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
The department said effective waste management begins at the household and community levels through individual actions and mindful choices.
The agency reported improvements in solid waste management across the country and cited clearer accountability among stakeholders. DENR officials emphasized a commitment to working with regional offices and partners to strengthen compliance with environmental laws.
The agency also noted progress in the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility Act, or Republic Act 11898.
Compliance reports from obligated enterprises as of October 2025 showed that 120 million kilograms of rigid plastics and 124 million kilograms of flexible plastics were diverted during the 2024 period. The country has achieved a 56.12-percent recovery and diversion rate, surpassing the mandated target of 40 percent.
To help households celebrate sustainably, the agency suggested choosing washable plates and cutlery over single-use plastic items and using eco-bags while shopping.
Residents are encouraged to recycle old newspapers or scrap paper into gift wrappers and keep ribbons and decor for future occasions. The agency also advised reducing food waste by serving reasonable portions and storing leftovers properly.
The department maintains that through small everyday actions, the public can protect the environment while enjoying meaningful celebrations with families and communities.
