ONE of the most anticipated days of the whole year is Christmas Eve, a time when families eat together, exchange gifts, and spend precious moments talking about their life stories and the highlights of their year. Yet even with these shared traditions, Christmas Eve is experienced differently by everyone—some celebrate it the usual way, while others find unique, personal ways to make the night meaningful.
For some, the night brings comfort and a much-needed pause. The holiday becomes a chance to breathe after months of exhaustion and responsibility. This is true for Joyce Regeir, 34, who views Christmas Eve as her ultimate reset. With the demands of work constantly following her even on her days off, she finds rare peace during this special night.
“Ang Christmas Eve para sa’kin ’yun ’yung time ko para sa relaxation ko sa sarili ko, kumbaga pahinga ko na,” she shared. For Joyce, this isn’t just a holiday—it is a sanctuary. “Kapag Christmas Eve talaga, ’yun yung masasabi kong pahinga na pahinga ko talaga.” In the middle of the season’s festivities, what she values most is the silence, the pause, and the chance to simply exist without pressure.
However, not everyone experiences Christmas Eve with ease and comfort. For some, the night highlights distance and longing. Many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) spend the holiday far from home, wishing they could celebrate with their loved ones but choosing sacrifice for their families’ future.
Jenally Arbonida, 46, an OFW domestic helper in New Zealand, knows this feeling deeply. “Christmas Eve for me is somehow sad, because as an OFW I just do video calls with my family,” she said. Although she spends the celebration with the family she serves abroad, her heart remains anchored to the Philippines. For her, every Christmas Eve is a reminder of the sacrifices she makes in hopes of returning home one day. “It’s hard for me, but I know someday that I’ll be there with my family as soon as I saved money for my vacation.”
For others, Christmas Eve is a day of rare and cherished reunions. As families grow and members begin their own lives, gatherings become harder to arrange. But on this night, many take the time to reconnect, filling homes once again with laughter, stories, and familiar warmth.
This joyful sentiment resonates with Gabriel Bucal, who treasures Christmas Eve for bringing his family together. “Christmas Eve ay isang araw kung saan nakukumpleto kaming pamilya,” he shared. Now older, with three children who have families of their own, he cherishes the moments when everyone—including his grandchildren—returns home to celebrate.
These different viewpoints reveal that Christmas Eve holds a unique meaning for each person. Whether it is a moment of rest, a night of longing, or a time of reunion, the essence of the celebration remains rooted in love. No matter how or where it is spent, Christmas Eve continues to remind people of connection, hope, and the ties that bring families together even in the most challenging times.
