Eumir Felix Marcial’s gold medal in boxing came under difficult circumstances, marked by physical pain, emotional strain, and challenges beyond the ring.
After securing Team Philippines’ lone boxing gold, Marcial paid a courtesy visit to Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino at the Team Philippines headquarters in Bangkok. The meeting served as a gesture of appreciation, with Marcial crediting Tolentino—whom he calls “Ninong Bambol”—for the support he received throughout the campaign.
Marcial recalled that Tolentino personally reached out to him before his crucial bout, a timely gesture that helped calm his nerves and refocus his mindset before stepping into the ring.
The boxing team, however, nearly withdrew from the competition due to frustrations over what athletes believed to be unfair officiating. Emotions were high, morale was low, and confidence had been shaken. out of four Filipino boxers that made the final round, only Marcial emerged with the golden lace.
Compatriots Aira Villegas, Jay Brian Baricuatro and Flint Jaya all settled for silvers after tough breaks against Thai foes.
According to Marcial, Tolentino intervened by meeting with the athletes and urging them to continue competing, emphasizing the importance of representing the country and protecting its international reputation. The team ultimately decided to stay, with Marcial pressing on in his campaign.
The physical cost of that decision was evident.
Marcial later revealed the injuries he sustained during the gold medal bout, including swollen and battered hands that limited his performance. He attributed the injuries to the organizers’ ban on professional-standard hand wraps, a common form of protection for elite boxers. Without them, fighters—particularly those in heavier weight classes—absorbed greater impact in each exchange.
Marcial noted that several boxers experienced similar injuries, turning the competition into a test of endurance as much as skill.
Despite the setbacks, Marcial secured the gold medal and completed his SEA Games campaign on a high note. He is now set to refocus on his professional boxing career.
