PLDT Inc. and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. are intensifying efforts to combat the theft of cable and telecommunications equipment by strengthening ties with local government units, police and communities across the Philippines.
Through their Asset Protection and Security Risk Governance group, the companies expanded a barangay-based asset protection project known as Bayanihan. The program conducted sessions in several cities in 2025, including Makati, Davao City, Quezon City and Cagayan de Oro, to improve local monitoring and reporting of infrastructure interference.
The initiative follows a period of persistent vandalism and theft that disrupted digital services for millions of customers. In 2024, the companies recorded nearly 1,000 loss incidents primarily involving copper cables. In some areas of Manila, theft occurred as frequently as every 3 days, resulting in service interruptions and revenue losses.
PLDT and Smart property, facilities and asset resiliency management vice president and head Leo Gonzales said the collaboration emphasizes the role of residents in maintaining their own connectivity. Gonzales said safeguarding equipment ensures digital services remain reliable for the homes, businesses and institutions that depend on them daily.
