Simbang Gabi brings families and faithful together ahead of Christmas

ASIDE from Christmas carols, Christmas parties, and well-loved holiday foods such as bibingka and puto bumbong, one of the most awaited events of the Christmas season is the start of Simbang Gabi and Misa de Gallo.

Every year, Simbang Gabi begins on December 15, while Misa de Gallo starts at the early dawn of December 16. It is a series of nine Masses held before Christmas Day.

This tradition began many years ago during the Spanish period in the Philippines. During that time, farmers worked very early in the morning and found it hard to attend regular Mass.

To help them, the church offered Masses before sunrise so they could pray before going to the fields. Over time, this practice became a meaningful Christmas devotion that is still followed today.

In the present day, many churches are filled with churchgoers and devoted faithful who wake up early to attend the Mass. Families and friends walk together in the cool morning air, while church bells ring to welcome the day.

Inside the church, people pray, sing Christmas hymns, and listen to the readings. The calm and quiet atmosphere of the early morning helps many reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, which is love, hope, and faith.

For many, attending Simbang Gabi is more than a tradition. It is a personal sacrifice and a way to show devotion. Some believe that completing all nine Masses is a form of prayer for their wishes and hopes. Others attend simply to thank God and feel closer to the community.

After the Mass, the celebration continues outside the church. Vendors sell warm bibingka and puto bumbong, which people enjoy while talking and sharing stories. These simple moments bring joy and strengthen community ties.

Simbang Gabi and Misa de Gallo remind everyone that Christmas is not only about gifts and parties, but also about faith, togetherness, and shared moments as one community.
