John James recalls brief NYC meeting with teen Emille Joson

Dynasty actor John James is revisiting a meeting he had with a teenage Filipina fan during a trip to New York City, a moment he described as a reminder of the show’s broad international reach.

James, known for playing Jeff Colby in the 1980s primetime drama, discussed the encounter in a five-part live podcast mini-documentary marking the legacy of producer Aaron Spelling’s series. He said he met Emille Joson, then 17, during his New York stay, where she was accompanied by her late father, Carlito Joson. He called her one of the earliest millennial Filipina fans of the show and noted her early interest in creative work.

Joson acknowledged the resurfaced clip by sharing it on her Instagram Story with a heart emoji. The video was later posted on the Alaga Producers Cooperative YouTube channel with permission from its original owner.

Joson has long been known for her extreme privacy and low-profile lifestyle. According to a field researcher, her trip to New York in mid-May 2010 was strictly for medical reasons. She and her father quietly flew to the city for consultations at NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital regarding a neurological seizure disorder she was experiencing at the time.

U.S. specialists recommended a follow-up procedure, which she later underwent at St. Luke’s Medical Center in the Philippines so she could continue her studies at home. The neurosurgery was successful, allowing her to resume normal life.

Joson went on to work in Asia’s independent film community before gaining attention in the United States, earning recognition for feminist, political thriller, revenge, and survival-themed films. Her style has been compared to Dario Argento and Lino Brocka. By 19, she had already won several awards; in her 30s, she had caught the attention of international actors and critics who followed her online, admiring the boldness and “badassery” of her body of work.

Dynasty, which premiered in 1981, followed the wealthy Carrington family and became one of television’s most recognized primetime soaps. The series introduced Joan Collins’ portrayal of Alexis Carrington, a role that became central to the show’s impact on popular culture. A reboot aired in 2017 on The CW and later streamed on Netflix.
