LRT-2 to extend hours today; public urged to do early shopping

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that the LRT Line 2’s operating hours will be extended from Dec. 9 to Dec. 30 to accommodate late-night commuters during the holiday rush.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) advised commuters to plan their shopping trips early as it anticipates a 20-percent surge in traffic volume during the holidays.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the DOTr to extend rail line operations to serve more passengers this Christmas Season.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the LRT-2 management has guaranteed that the one-hour operations extension will not affect the rail line’s maintenance and safety routines.

“President Marcos, Jr. told us that we should be able to serve more passengers this Christmas. We assure passengers that even though the LRT-2 service is extended, our maintenance and safety routines on the trains and rails will still be thoroughly checked,” Lopez said.

Beginning December 9, the LRT-2 will implement the following extended runs:

  • Last train from LRT-2 Antipolo Station – 10:00 p.m.
  • Last train from LRT-2 Recto Station – 10:30 p.m.

This will also be the schedule for Dec. 25, Christmas Day.

However, on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the LRT-2 will implement the following shortened service schedule:

  • On Dec. 24, the last train from LRT-2 Antipolo Station leaves at 8 p.m. while the last train from LRT-2 Recto Station departs at 8:30 p.m.
  • On Dec. 31, the last train from LRT-2 Antipolo Station leaves at 7 p.m., while the last train from LRT-2 Recto Station  departs at 7:30 p.m.

Regular operations will resume on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.

Meanwhile, the MRT-3 will implement its reduced train schedule on Dec. 24 and 31, and adjusted schedule for Dec. 25 and Jan. 1

This increase in traffic volume is expected as more people flock to malls and markets to complete their holiday shopping activities. The agency urged consumers to visit commercial centers nearest to their homes to avoid being stuck in traffic jams across the metropolis.

The MMDA also advised motorists to brace for heavy traffic on Dec. 19, the last Friday before Christmas, due to the influx of last-minute shoppers, holiday gatherings and other events, and people going to and from provinces.

By planning ahead, the people can minimize delays and make their holiday shopping experience more enjoyable.

“Make your Christmas shopping hassle- and stress-free by planning ahead of time. This way, heavy traffic, long queues in parking, and crowded malls can be avoided,” said MMDA chairman Romando Artes.

There are 131 malls in the National Capital Region, and 29 of them are located along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).

The MMDA will deploy additional personnel to manage traffic on identified choke points on EDSA. The agency also extended the working hours of its traffic personnel, especially those assigned for night duty near shopping centers.

Mall operators have agreed with the MMDA proposal to adjust business hours to ease road congestion during the peak buying season.

The agency also intensified anti-illegal parking operations, particularly along Mabuhay Lanes, which are alternative routes for those who want to avoid EDSA.

The agency is expecting a 20 percent increase in traffic volume this Christmas because of the influx of people and vehicles from Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, and Central Luzon.
