Travel groups launch mental health support for PH disaster survivors

The Philippine IATA Agents Travel Association (PIATA) and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) are teaming up to provide essential mental health support to communities severely impacted by Typhoon Tino and the Bogo earthquake.

It marks a first for the travel industry, focusing on Liloan, Cutcut, Toledo and Bogo.

The organizations will deploy a team of therapists and counselors to address the rising cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and emotional distress among children and adults in the affected areas. Untreated psychological trauma can lead to long-term issues such as depression.

The Philippines’ location along the Pacific Ring of Fire and within the typhoon belt makes it highly vulnerable to natural disasters. While the resilience of Filipinos is often highlighted, the accompanying mental health toll is frequently overlooked. This joint effort by PIATA and PATA aims to fill that critical gap by offering professional care.

“This is not just about rebuilding homes—it’s about rebuilding lives. We want survivors to know that their emotional well-being matters just as much as their physical recovery,” said PIATA president and PATA chairperson Maria Paz Alberto.

A benefit concert featuring acclaimed singer Lou Bonnevie is scheduled for Dec. 10 at RJ Dusit. The event will serve as a celebration of resilience and a call for sustained support for mental health programs in disaster-stricken communities.

The initiative is made possible by the generous support of sponsors, including PAGCOR, SABRE, Bluewater Resorts and China Airlines, whose commitment is instrumental in bringing the mental health advocacy to life.

The pioneering effort underscores the importance of integrating mental health care into the overall disaster response, with PIATA and PATA inviting partners and the public to ensure survivors heal and thrive emotionally as well as physically.
