Negros prisoners, families conduct protest fast

As the world marks the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners, families and friends of political detainees and persons deprived of liberty staged a protest Wednesday in front of the BJMP-NIR in Negros.
They demanded swift action from Regional Director JCSUPT Brendan Fulgencio on what they described as worsening jail conditions.

At the same time, political prisoners and some detainees at the Negros Occidental District Jail-Male Dormitory launched a protest fast against alleged cruel and degrading treatment under Warden JSUPT Crisyrel Awe.

Human rights groups reported excessive restrictions, collective punishments, denial of good conduct time allowances, harmful sun exposure schedules, and lack of food and medical supplies.

They also cited the death of detainee Warlito Turbela in November and the alleged illegal solitary confinement of political prisoner Lorenzo “Tisoy” Perolino, which a Bacolod court ruled violated his rights.

Supporters urged authorities to remove Warden Awe and ensure humane treatment for detainees, while church leaders expressed solidarity. Jail officials could not be reached for comment.
