SMC Tollways’ 9-month income rose to P7.37b

SMC Tollways Corp. reported a 1-percent rise in net income in the first nine months of 2025 to P7.37 billion from P7.26 billion in the same period last year, driven by a surge in vehicle traffic.

The company’s total revenue for the January to September period was P16.57 billion, up 6 percent from P15.67 billion in the previous year.

SMC Skyway Corp. achieved an average daily traffic (ADT) of 283,106, up 3 percent from 275,016 in 2024. SMC Skyway Stage 3 Corp. saw a higher increase, with an ADT of 176,165, up 10 percent from 160,206 in 2024.

The company faced higher operational expenses, which tempered the net income growth. Consolidated cost of services rose 3 percent, led by an increase in government fees that are directly proportional to the increase in toll revenue, higher costs for repairs and maintenance due to hardware and software upkeep and an increase in contracted services covering manpower and radio-frequency identification (RFID) subscriber management.

Operating expenses recorded a more significant increase of 32 percent, attributed to an increase in management fees due to additional allocation, a surge in taxes and licenses due to a higher revenue tax base for business permits, increased contracted services from the recognition of overtime charges incurred in 2024 and higher other expenses including insurance membership dues and advertising costs.

SMC Tollways is moving forward with the construction of the TR4 project, a 66.74-kilometer toll road. The P50-billion project is set to connect Sto. Tomas, Batangas to Lucena City, Quezon.

Upon completion in 2026, the new road is expected to reduce travel time between the two points from three hours to just 45 minutes.

The toll road will be divided into six sections: Sto Tomas, Batangas to Makban in Laguna (11.32 km), Makban to San Pablo City (12.75 km), San Pablo to Tiaong in Quezon (7.5 km), Tiaong to Candelaria (15 km), Candelaria to Tayabas (10.21 km) and Tayabas to Lucena (9.96 km).
