Long known for their battery technology and quickly becoming a global force with their MPVs and SUVs, BYD has also been serious about cornering the more compact EV sedan market currently dominated by their western counterparts. One of their answers: The Seal, an all-electric sedan designed to appeal directly to Model 3 and Model Y enthusiasts. And by releasing the Advanced Rear-Wheel Drive version, BYD ensures that this high-quality, fully featured challenger is accessible to a broader audience, maximizing its market potential whilst compromising none in performance and experience.
An iF Design Award recipient, the midsize fastback is part of BYD’s “Ocean Series.” Its sporty presence is defined by an X-shape inspired fascia that exudes a head-turning, modern flare. The sporty character continues inside with racing-style front seats upholstered in quilted leather, complemented by suede accents. Passengers will appreciate the ample headroom, with a panoramic glass roof that surprisingly insulates against outside heat while adding to the interior aesthetic. The five-seater offers a practical 450L of rear cargo space, plus a handy “frunk.” However, drivers should be mindful of the low ground clearance—at just 120mm unladen, its height is more akin to a sports coupe than a family sedan.

The cockpit is a masterclass in modern technology and minimalist design. In true BYD fashion, nearly all controls are digital, headlined by a massive 15.6-inch main touchscreen. This laptop-sized display is a technological centerpiece, capable of mechanically swiveling from landscape to portrait orientation for optimal visibility.
The entry-level Advanced RWD variant (P1,998,000) delivers a competitive 510km of range on a single charge and 310Nm of torque, while the range-topping Performance AWD variant (P2,548,000) adds an extra 80km of range and 670Nm of torque. Imagine the acceleration on this thing.
BYD’s American friends may have the more popular sedans, but with BYD leveraging its background as the world’s largest EV company, the Seal is not just a rival to the Models 3 and Y; it’s a strong presence that earns a serious consideration as a market leader in the electric sedan segment.
