DTI reports 99.92% compliance with post-typhoon price freeze

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported a 99.92-percent compliance rate among retailers nationwide with the 60-day price freeze on basic necessities imposed after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of national calamity due to Typhoons Tino and Uwan.

DTI teams have conducted 1,284 inspections since the declaration, checking prices and availability of goods like canned sardines, instant noodles, bread, coffee, bottled water and canned meat. In Metro Manila, out of 232 inspections, only one store received a show-cause order for possible overpricing and was given 48 hours to explain.

DTIO Secretary Cristina Roque said monitoring teams are conducting daily inspections of supermarkets, groceries and public markets to ensure full compliance with the mandated price ceilings.

“The DTI constantly upholds its responsibilities to consumers, working round-the-clock to implement the President’s directive and guarantee that essential goods stay affordable and accessible, especially for the communities most affected by the calamities,” said Roque.

The agency noted that supermarket and grocery operations have normalized after a temporary spike in demand during the typhoons, with supplies in major urban areas remaining stable.

DTI regional offices in provinces previously affected by access issues have coordinated with local governments and the Office of Civil Defense to keep deliveries moving and ensure timely distribution of essential goods.

Under the Price Act (RA 7581), prices of basic necessities in areas under a state of calamity are automatically frozen at prevailing levels for 60 days, unless lifted earlier by the President.

Establishments found selling above mandated prices may face penalties, including fines of up to P1 million and imprisonment of up to 10 years.
