The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, stated that it has received unverified reports indicating that some Filipino domestic workers may have been trapped in a Level 5 fire that engulfed a residential complex in Tai Po, New Territories.
In a message sent to reporters on Thursday, November 27, the DFA clarified that, at this time, the consulate has not received any confirmed reports of Filipinos killed or injured in the incident.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs, through the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, has not received any confirmed reports of Filipinos killed or injured as a result of the Level 5 fire at a residential complex in Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong,” the message stated.
The DFA noted that due to the scale and intensity of the fire, it may take some time before the extent of the damage and the number and nationality of the victims can be fully assessed.
It also expressed its commitment to coordinate with the Hong Kong Police Force and is prepared to assist any Filipino nationals who may be affected or injured in the fire.
Recent reports indicate that at least 44 people have died in the fire, and 279 individuals are still missing.
