St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) has launched a new, completely free 40-bed facility, the Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward, to provide world-class healthcare to underserved and indigent Filipino patients at no cost.
The initiative, announced Monday by the St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation Inc. (SLMCFI), transforms generosity into accessible care by fully integrating the charity ward into the hospital’s main building in Quezon City.
This ensures charity patients receive the same standard of medical expertise and modern facilities as private patients.
Admissions for the new ward began on Nov. 10. The facility’s name is rooted in the Sanskrit word Dāna which means “the practice of selfless giving,” and is dedicated to Mrs. Evelyn D. Ang through the partnership of her family, Mr. Philip Ang, and other donors.
St. Luke’s Medical Center president and chief executive Dr. Dennis Serrano said the ward represents the core mission of bringing world-class healthcare to every Filipino.
“By fully integrating charity care into our hospital system, we are proving that excellence and compassion can coexist,” Serrano said.
“This initiative is not just about access to healthcare. It’s also about giving dignity, equity and hope to our patients in need,” he said.
The ward will provide care for a dedicated number of inpatients and outpatients, offering life-changing procedures across both St. Luke’s Quezon City and Bonifacio Global City campuses.
SLMCFI president Dr. Benjamin Campomanes Jr. said the ward is a cornerstone of the foundation’s long-standing social service programs, which cover complex, high-cost procedures like organ transplants and cancer treatments.
Campomanes confirmed that the ward operates hand-in-hand with existing departments. “The same specialists, nurses and clinical teams who serve private patients are also attending to charity patients,” he said.
The integration reflects the hospital’s long-term “One Healthcare System” vision for seamless coexistence of charity and private services.
