The Philippine film community is grieving the deaths of veteran character actor Dido dela Paz and acclaimed film editor Jesus “Jess” Navarro, who both passed away on November 22.
Dido, 69, died after a seven-year battle with adenoid cancer. His family confirmed the news in a social media post, writing, “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dido de la Paz. A father, a brother, and a friend to many. Further details regarding the wake will be posted on Monday.”
Dido began his acting career in 1976 in Philippine theater before transitioning to television in 1978. He later gained wide recognition for his award-winning portrayal in the 2017 Cinemalaya film Respeto, which earned him Best Supporting Actor at both Cinemalaya and the Asia-Pacific Film Festival. His filmography spans decades, including Edward, Birdshot, Sukob, Serbis, Leonor Will Never Die, and many more.
On the same day, the family of Jess Navarro announced his passing. “He will forever be remembered for his gentle heart, his stories, his passion for films, and the love he gave so freely to everyone around him,” they said.
Jess leaves behind a towering legacy as one of the most awarded editors in Philippine cinema, with credits including Kisapmata, Oro, Plata, Mata, Batch ’81, Sister Stella L, Jose Rizal, and Muro-Ami. He was honored with the Natatanging Gawad Urian and later became a Hall of Fame awardee at both the Metro Manila Film Festival and FAMAS.
