Ronin, the blockchain developed by Sky Mavis, the creator of Axie Infinity, and virtual asset service provider Coins.ph plan expansion to allow users to spend the PHPC stablecoin at over 600,000 merchants across the Philippines.
The move, which is subject to necessary regulatory approvals and authorizations, would integrate PHPC stablecoin payments via QRPH, the country’s national QR payment standard, bringing cryptocurrency spending into everyday life for millions of Filipinos.
Once approved, the integration would allow users to access PHPC, a Philippine peso-backed stablecoin, directly from their Ronin Wallet to pay for groceries, food deliveries and utilities by scanning a QRPH code.
The announcement, made at the YGG Play Summit, marks the first step in Ronin’s strategy to support digital payments, savings, and remittances across the Asia-Pacific region.
“Once we secure the necessary permits, the integration of PHPC into the QRPH network by 2026 would be a game-changer,” said Coins.ph chief executive Wei Zhou.
“Soon, anyone will be able to pay with PHPC simply by scanning a QR code through Ronin Wallet, just like with other leading mobile wallets, but with the unprecedented speed and security of on-chain value. This is the moment digital assets become truly useful in everyday life,” he said.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reports that digital payments account for 57.4 percent of all retail transactions in the Philippines, exceeding national targets, with over 66.4 percent of person-to-merchant payments already digital.
The country is also a major recipient of remittances, recording over US$40.2 billion in 2024.
PHPC was launched on the Ronin blockchain in July 2024 while still operating in the BSP sandbox, and one PHPC is designed to track one Philippine peso. Coins.ph, a BSP-regulated virtual asset service provider, manages its liquidity and reserves, according to Coins.ph.
“This integration completes the loop that was foreshadowed back when merchants began accepting SLP and AXS for goods during the 2021 pandemic,” said Sky Mavis co-founder Jeffrey Zirlin.
“Millions of Ronin Wallet users in the Philippines will soon have a seamless way to transmute in-game items and tokens into food, transportation costs, and the necessities of daily life,” said Zirlin.
Ronin Wallet, currently a major platform for gaming and earning, may soon evolve into a tool for everyday financial activities like paying and saving, pending regulatory approval and compliance review.
