Movem Electric Inc., the electric mobility solutions provider of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), has teamed up with Megaworld Corp. to electrify the developer’s Citylink bus fleet across several of its townships.
The companies said the collaboration is part of a long-term roadmap to gradually phase out existing internal combustion engine (ICE) buses and transition to cleaner, quieter electric transportation within high-density urban centers.
The electric buses (e-buses) will be integrated into the regular operations of Megaworld’s bus fleet operator, CityLink Coach Services Inc., which transports residents, workers and daily commuters to and from various Megaworld townships.
The initial rollout began with Movem enabling Megaworld’s pilot deployment of the first e-bus in its McKinley Hill township in Taguig City in April.
A second deployment is targeted for December at Newport City in Pasay. Nine additional units are scheduled to be deployed by 2026 across various locations, including Uptown Bonifacio and other townships in the Visayas. Each bus can accommodate 24 seated and 11 standing passengers.
Movem will also support Megaworld’s e-bus fleet by deploying EV charging infrastructure to ensure efficient fleet management and maximum uptime.
“We are committed to continue supporting Megaworld to accelerate their electric mobility initiatives,” said Maria Francesca Defensor, Movem chief operating officer.
“It is through working with like-minded partners that we can drive the Philippines’ journey towards cleaner and greener transportation,” said Defensor.
The shift to e-buses aims to reduce carbon emissions, lower noise pollution, and provide a more efficient comfortable ride for thousands of passengers daily.
“This partnership is a vital step towards fulfilling our vision of building sustainable townships across the Philippines,” said Don Earl Caagbay, Megaworld head of estate management.
“An important part of this initiative is being able to provide innovative mobility solutions for people who live work and play in our townships. This partnership with Movem is just the beginning of bringing this vision to reality,” said Caagbay.
This collaboration serves as a model for other townships and commercial hubs seeking to transition to smarter mobility as the demand for sustainable transport grows.
