Business groups back new BIR chief Mendoza, seek closer ties

Major Philippine business organizations on Monday expressed full support for newly-appointed Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza, saying they look forward to continuing structured dialogue and strengthening tax reforms under his leadership.

Members of the Partnership with Multi-Sectoral Group (PMSG) in a joint statement congratulated Mendoza, who previously served as Finance Undersecretary and a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) board director.

The PMSG, a coalition recently formed under a memorandum of agreement with the BIR, said a strong and modern revenue agency is essential to maintaining a stable and competitive business environment.

The groups noted that Mendoza’s appointment comes at a crucial time for sustaining the country’s economic momentum, citing his distinguished public service record grounded in extensive experience in tax administration, fiscal oversight and organizational leadership.

They expect constructive engagement with Mendoza, particularly in aligning policies, simplifying tax compliance, enhancing taxpayer education and improving voluntary compliance.

“His expertise comes at a critical time for sustaining the country’s economic momentum, and we look forward to his programs toward a more efficient, transparent, and trusted BIR,” the PMSG said.

“We are confident that under his leadership, the BIR will further simplify compliance, strengthen taxpayer education, and promote voluntary compliance,” the group said.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) also congratulated Mendoza, extending its gratitude for his “steadfast support to the ecozone program” during his tenure on the PEZA Board. The agency said the “PEZA family… looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing our mandate to provide red-carpet service to investors.”

The coalition also expressed appreciation for former BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr., citing his initiatives to promote a more business-friendly tax environment, push forward digitalization efforts and strengthen taxpayer services.

The PMSG is composed of the Alliance of Tech Innovators for the Nation, Association of Certified Public Accountants in Commerce and Industry, Association of Certified Public Accountants in Public Practice, Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc., Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, Joint Foreign Chambers of the Philippines, Makati Business Club, Management Association of the Philippines, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. and the Tax Management Association of the Philippines.
