Philippine sustainability movement pushes organic food systems in HORECA sector

The Philippine Sustainability Movement (PSM) is boosting its campaign to promote organic practices and establish responsible, traceable food systems, particularly within the country’s hotel, restaurant and catering (HORECA) sector.

Marking its 10th anniversary at the Sheraton Manila Hotel, the movement gathered industry leaders, sustainability advocates and development partners to reaffirm their commitment to ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship, and food transparency.

“The movement has grown into a community that champions environmental stewardship and transparency in food systems,” said Christian Schmidradner, initiator of the Philippine Sustainability Movement and founder of Pristine Solutions.

“Our goal for the next decade is to make sustainability more achievable by helping more organizations adopt responsible practices that create tangible impact for people and the planet,” he said.

The PSM, initiated by Pristine Solutions, has evolved into a collaborative platform for businesses, NGOs and government agencies to integrate sustainability throughout the food value chain.

A key highlight of the event was the launch of the ESG and Sustainability Framework by PYC Foods and One World Deli, which embeds environmental and social accountability into daily food operations.

Roscila Anne Baylon, head of nutrition and wellness at PYC Foods, said trust and traceability are now at the heart of how they build food businesses.

“Through our ESG program, we ensure that what we serve is not only safe and nutritious but also responsibly sourced and transparently produced,” said Baylon.

Panel sessions addressed organic transformation, plastics reduction, animal welfare and integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into hospitality and retail operations.

Representing the global organic community, Alexandra. Castillo, Philippines coordinator for promotions and market linkages at Naturland e.V., said organic farming is the foundation for stronger and more resilient food systems.

“Organic is one of the ways sustainability can be achieved. At Naturland, we bring this to life by equipping farmers with practical knowledge helping businesses meet organic standards and empowering consumers to make responsible choices,” said Castillo.

The event also provided support for the ongoing “European Organic: Nurturing Every Juan” campaign, which is implemented by Naturland with funding from the European Union. The campaign works to promote organic awareness and encourage Filipinos to choose sustainable products.v
