NLEX Corporation has completed a project to clear and regrade road shoulders between the Harbor Link Interchange and Marilao to help manage heavy traffic during peak travel periods.
The initiative is designed to improve mobility and enhance road safety along the highly congested stretch.
The toll operator’s work covered about 10,000 linear meters in both directions. It involved removing accumulated sand, grass and debris to maximize space, restoring proper cross-slope for improved rainwater drainage and adding a 150-mm base course in select areas for a more stable and smoother surface.
“By clearing and upgrading the shoulders, stalled vehicles can be moved quickly for assistance or repair and minor incidents can be cleared faster—allowing traffic to return to normal more quickly,” said NLEX president and general-manager Luis Reñon.
Reñon said patrol crews may supervise the use of the improved shoulders by vehicles in exceptional cases of heavy congestion.
NLEX cited the crucial role of road shoulders in maintaining safety and traffic efficiency. It reminded motorists that parking, idling or using the shoulder lane as a rest area is strictly prohibited.
NLEX is a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC), the toll road arm of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC).
