The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has placed more areas in Visayas and Mindanao under tropical cyclone wind signal no. 4 due to the effects of Typhoon ‘Tino’ (Kalmaegi), which further intensified while moving west northwestward over the east of Dinagat Islands.
According to its 8:00 p.m. weather bulletin on Monday, November 3, PAGASA said ‘Tino’ was tracked at 95 kilometers southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. It was moving west northwestward at 15 km per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.
“‘Tino’ may make landfall or pass very close to Homonhon Island or Dinagat Islands tonight. It is then expected to make landfall over Leyte or Southern Leyte by tomorrow (04 November) early morning, before crossing Visayas and northern Palawan from tomorrow until Wednesday (05 November) early morning,” according to the state weather bureau.
“This weather disturbance will likely emerge over the West Philippine Sea by Wednesday morning or afternoon and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Thursday (06 November) morning,” PAGASA added.
In a press conference held earlier, state weather forecasters said the typhoon was moving closer to the Visayas region, tracking a similar path as that of Super Typhoon ‘Yolanda’ (Haiyan) in 2013.
The Office of Civil Defense in Mimaropa clarified, however, that the comparison ends there as ‘Tino’ was not projected to be as strong as the previous super typhoon.
Several provincial and local government units in the affected regions and provinces have since declared class and work suspensions in light of the ongoing bad weather conditions.
