Manila Water keeps water losses low, meets swift repair targets

Manila Water Company Inc. said it has maintained low levels of non-revenue water (NRW) through swift leak detection and rapid repairs, keeping its average NRW at 14.35 percent from January to September 2025.

The performance is comparable to levels in developed countries and reflects the company’s consistent control over water losses.

In September, the water utility delivered 44.32 million cubic meters of potable water to more than 1.2 million connections in its concession area.

During the same month, Manila Water reported that all 57 mainline pipe bursts (300mm and below) across the East Zone were repaired within 24 hours.

This exceeded the 95-percent target set by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System – Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO), which helped minimize service interruptions and prevent water loss.

“Our ability to keep NRW below 15 percent is a result of continuous investments in network monitoring and leak detection technologies, coupled with the dedication of our field teams who respond promptly to pipe bursts,” said Dittie Galang, head of the corporate communications department at Manila Water.

NRW refers to water that is produced but not billed to customers, typically due to leaks or illegal connections. From 2022 to 2025, Manila Water has consistently kept NRW close to or below its benchmark of 15 percent.

The company noted that even a one percent improvement in NRW can translate to significant savings of up to 14 million liters of water per day. This operational efficiency supports Manila Water’s goals of water conservation, service reliability and environmental stewardship.
