The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and GMA Network have launched a new series of videos to strengthen their campaign against digital piracy, following a recent survey reporting that piracy consumption in the country rose to 70 percent.
The campaign, launched at the close of Anti-Piracy Month, aims to encourage responsible content consumption and highlight the cybersecurity risks associated with pirated content, such as malware and identity theft. Actors from the show Encantadia Chronicles: Sang’gre are featured in the new videos.
GMA officials met with acting director general Nathaniel Arevalo of IPOPHL to discuss new developments in piracy, emerging AI-related policies and future areas of collaboration.
“GMA has been a steadfast partner in the fight against piracy. We are glad to refresh on our mutual commitment to building a vibrant media landscape rooted in responsible consumption and respect for intellectual property,” Arevalo said.
A 2024 survey by the Asia Video Industry Association’s Coalition Against Piracy underscored the need for stronger cooperation among industry players, government, and other stakeholders, noting the 70 percent rise in piracy consumption.
IPOPHL and GMA have a strong working relationship, solidified by a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in 2023 to reinforce their shared commitment to the creative industry.
Since signing the MOU, the two parties have collaborated on several initiatives, including the second Philippine International Copyright Summit and a 2024 symposium on piracy and cybercrime. IPOPHL has also actively supported GMA’s anti-piracy drives.
“Piracy threatens the very foundation of creative industries. Through our strengthened partnership with IPOPHL, GMA Network reaffirms its commitment to protecting Filipino content creators and ensuring that their work is respected, valued, and legally safeguarded,” said Vinney Ibarra, head of GMA’s legal affairs department.
