Olympic double-gold medalist Carlos Edriel Yulo made it to the top of the podium again after receiving the highest score in the men’s vault event on Saturday at the 53rd World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The 25-year-old Yulo performed before a familiar field at the Indonesia Arena and came out with an average score of 14,866 points.
This was Yulo’s first gold in the meet, a day after he got another podium in the floor exercise finals where he could only finish third.
It was a tightly fought finals, with the silver medal in the vault event snared by a familiar foe, Artur Davtyan of Armenia with 14,833 points, which is a fraction lower than Yulo’s score.
“Piked handspring double front half, gorgeous in the air until the twist where he softens his knees slightly, chest down on the landing but feet do not move!” described the impressed annotator of the Gymternet after Yulo’s opening try.
When Yulo won the vault gold medal at the Paris Olympics, Davytan was around, and the Armenian also took the silver back then.
This time, it was Ukrainian gymnast Nazar Chepurnyi with 14,483 points who took home the bronze. Tommaso Brugnami of Italy was a close fourth with 14,466
On Friday, Yulo was looking slightly out-of-sync when he scored 14.533 points, settling for the bronze medal in the men’s floor exercise finals.
The 4’11” Yulo ruled the floor event in the 2023 Paris Summer Games and in the 2019 edition held in Stuttgart, Germany.
Yulo was able to salvage the bronze for the floor exercise finals behind the 1-2 finish of two Britons, bannered by Paris Olympic bronze medalist Jake Jarman and Luke Whitehouse.
Jarman, a Fil-British gymnast, had bagged his second world gold medal with a top score of 14.866 points while compatriot Whitehouse took the silver medal with 14.666 points.
