Comelec to work with ICI should it ask about poll bets’ financers

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it is willing to cooperate and provide information with the Independent Commission on Infrastructure (ICI) should its ongoing investigation on flood control projects lead to the involvement of some politicians’ campaign funders in the last two elections.

Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia said on Wednesday they are already doing this with the Office of the Ombudsman and are ready to extend the same courtesy to the ICI, if and when it asks for their findings and assistance.

“We will immediately comply because the request comes from government agencies, whose mandate is really about prosecuting corrupt practices,” Garcia said in a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The Comelec chief has revealed that four senators elected during the May 2025 polls were among those that have possibly received campaign contributions from private contractors based on their Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCEs).

“Of the six senatorial candidates, four won while two lost,” Garcia said.

He added that there are other national and local candidates who were found to have benefited from campaign contributions of contractors: two party-list groups, three congressional bets, one national political party, and two gubernatorial candidates.

Garcia, however, did not disclose their identities yet pending the evaluation of other SOCEs and confirmation from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on whether the listed contractors have past or present dealings with the government.
