The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) on Tuesday extended its condolences to the family and colleagues of media practitioner Noel Bellen Samar, who died a day after he was shot in Albay.
Samar, 54—a broadcaster affiliated with Kadunong ITV and DWIZ—passed away around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, following a medical procedure, PTFOMS said in a statement.
The victim was attacked Monday morning while traveling along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Morera, Guinobatan, Albay, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
A Special Investigation Task Group (SITG “Samar”) has been formed to coordinate with the Philippine National Police (PNP) in identifying and arresting those behind the shooting.
“This event highlights the challenges faced by our media practitioners in their pursuit of truth and accountability,” said Jose Torres Jr., PTFOMS executive director.
“We stand in solidarity with journalists across the nation during these difficult times, reaffirming our steadfast commitment to upholding press freedom and ensuring the safety of all media workers.”
Philippine National Police (PNP) Acting Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. condemned the violence, emphasizing that the crime against the journalist has no place in society.
“We recognize the important role that journalists play in promoting transparency and accountability in government,” he said.
