MMDA brings Bayanihan sa Estero program to Pasig City

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has implemented its Bayanihan sa Estero Project in Pasig City, aligning with the government’s initiative to enhance its efforts in cleaning and maintaining drainage systems within the National Capital Region.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, and Congressman Roman Romulo led the activity held at Ilugin Creek on Monday, to prevent flooding and maintain environmental cleanliness.

Artes stated that the floods in Metro Manila are frequently attributed to obstructed waterways resulting from an overabundance of waste and, at times, water hyacinths.

When the estero is maintained properly, the water recedes more swiftly, thereby reducing the severity of flooding, he explained.

MMDA men and local volunteers used a trash skimmer, crane, backhoe, and dump truck in the cleaning operation for the rapid collection of water hyacinths.

Mayor Sotto conveyed his appreciation to the MMDA for the agency’s steadfast support to their city.

He emphasized the significance of maintaining clean esteros, as clogged waterways filled with garbage lead to stagnant water, creating an environment conducive to the proliferation of insects and microbes.

Additionally, the MMDA formed a team to conduct anti-dengue misting and defogging in the area to prevent diseases like dengue, which comes from dirty water.

Artes said the program is the agency’s response to President Marcos’ socioeconomic agenda on strengthening disaster resilience.
