A Bicol-based media practitioner on Monday was injured in a gun attack along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Morera, Guinobatan, Albay, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Bicol Regional Office.
The Albay Police Provincial Office identified the victim as Noel Bellen Samar, 54, a broadcaster affiliated with Kadunong ITV and radio station DWIZ.
Samar, who sustained gunshot wounds to the left side of his chest and abdomen, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) strongly condemned the “brazen attack” on Samar, adding that they are actively monitoring the case and have deployed a team on the ground to ensure a thorough, impartial, and swift investigation.
“More than just hunting down the gunman or gunmen, it is crucial that we uncover the motive behind this heinous attack and bring the masterminds to justice,” Undersecretary and PTFOMS Executive Director Jose Torres Jr. said.
“This act of violence is not only an attack on Mr. Samar but also an assault on press freedom in the country. We must send a strong message that such acts will not be tolerated,” he added.
In response, the Philippine National Police (PNP) launched a nationwide hot pursuit operation to apprehend the suspect or suspects. Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) “Samar” has since been activated to lead the investigation, gather evidence, and identify those responsible.
