The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the country’s largest business group, has expressed continued confidence in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s integrity and is supporting his efforts to stamp out corruption in government.
PCCI president Enunina Mangio said on the sidelines of the 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E) at the SMX Convention Center Manila that the group’s recent statement calling for transparency and accountability was not a rebuke of the administration but a call for decisive action.
“We know that he is an honest person, so we are confident. We just want him to help us address this issue because the Filipino people are expecting results,” Mangio said.
Mangio said the PCCI does not support calls for the President’s resignation amid allegations of corruption involving public funds. “Why don’t we just wait for his decisive action? He doesn’t need to resign because you can see his seriousness in addressing this. Remember, he was the one who brought it out,” she said.
Mangio said that shortly after the PCCI publicly urged the government to act on reports of large-scale corruption, the President himself issued a statement acknowledging the issue and promising reforms.
“That is why we believe he is serious in wanting to address the concern. But there should be accountability. Whoever is found guilty, whoever they are, should be punished,” she said.
The business sector aims to prevent further unrest and encourage unity in addressing the issue, she said.
The PCCI will unveil a set of resolutions on the second day of the conference, highlighting transparency and accountability among key recommendations to the government.
Mangio said the chamber would formally submit the resolutions, with Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin promising to personally hand them over to the President.
