A municipal councilor from Datu Salibo, Maguindanao del Sur, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the killing of two barangay officials in 2023, the Philippine National Police (PNP) through the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has reported.

The CIDG Maguindanao Provincial Field Unit served the warrant of arrest with the help of the Highway Patrol Group, Aviation Security Group, Special Action Force, and other police units.

The suspect is facing two counts of murder issued by the Shariff Aguak Court in October 2023. He is listed as the No. 7 Regional Most Wanted Person in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). No bail was recommended.

Investigators said the case stemmed from a deadly explosion on August 16, 2023 in Sitio Patawali, Barangay Ganta, Shariff Saydona, Maguindanao del Sur.

The blast killed barangay captain Jun ‘Datumanot’ Silongan of Barangay Pendeten and seriously injured kagawad Salik Katua and eight others. Katua later died from his injuries.

Police said the explosion was allegedly carried out by the councilor and 21 other suspects, targeting the group of barangay officials led by Silongan, who were walking through an uninhabited farmland at the time.

“I commend the CIDG Bangsamoro Regional Field Unit, the Maguindanao Provincial Field Unit, and all operating teams for capturing the accused,” Morico said. “With his arrest, we have helped the victims and their families attain the justice they deserve. Maraming salamat sa inyo (Thank you).”
