Department of Transportation acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez on Wednesday ordered the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to provide payment options, including cash payments, for motor vehicle registrations at Private Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers (PMVIC), following complaints from clients about a single online payment option and a P65 convenience fee.
“We should not make our countrymen suffer. I have instructed LTO Chief Markus Lacanilao to look into this issue because it is a concern of our countrymen. P65 is a big amount, they can use it for other things like fares and food,” Lopez said, citing the need to better serve the public.
Complaints circulating on social media mentioned that the only payment option available at a PMVIC Vehicle Renewal Facility (VREF) was the mobile wallet service GCash.
Lopez also directed the PMVIC Authorization Committee to issue a show cause order against the PMVIC in question to explain why they were accepting only one payment option when other choices are available.
The LTO was also ordered to find ways to eliminate or reduce convenience fees for online payments and to review terms at Vehicle Renewal Facilities (VREF) so they can accept cash for processing transactions. This move aims to directly address the convenience fee issue.
