DOTr asks airlines to waive quake-related rebooking, cancellation fees

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has urged local airlines to waive rebooking and cancellation fees for passengers impacted by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Davao Oriental on Friday, following a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The DOTr, through the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) also pressed carriers to offer free cargo space for humanitarian and relief efforts, subject to the airlines’ safety and operational limitations. They were also asked to extend flexible and compassionate passenger accommodation measures, including expediting full refunds.

Acting DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez thanked the local airlines for their continued support in accelerating the delivery of critical aid to the quake-hit areas.

Lopez confirmed that all airports and seaports in Mindanao and the Visayas were operational following the 7.4-magnitude quake.

He said the President had directed the DOTr to ensure all ports remain operational for emergency air and sea transport missions to deliver humanitarian aid.

“When it comes to our ports, all ports are operational right now. When it comes to all airports, they can all travel, including the Davao Airport,” said Lopez.

The transport chief also directed the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to continue monitoring airport and seaport facilities and structures, especially for aftershocks.

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployable response groups have been instructed to assist in search and rescue missions.

Personnel from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Davao are assisting commuters and motorists to ensure road and commuter safety, with Love Bus free rides provided to stranded commuters.

Lopez also ordered the postponement of the Siargao International Surfing Cup 2025, scheduled for Oct. 23 to 31.
