The Philippines has expressed its firm commitment to advancing the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), a regional initiative envisioned to create a more connected, resilient and efficient energy system across Southeast Asia.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, in a speech read by Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella at the High-Level Forum on Carbon Credits: Strengthening Philippine-Singapore Collaboration for Climate Action in Makati City, cited the profound benefits of the grid.
“We can imagine renewable power flowing across borders — solar from one country, hydro from another, geothermal from a third — balancing each other’s strengths and diversifying supply. For maritime nations like the Philippines, subsea interconnections will be vital,” Garin said.
The APG is a regional initiative to link electricity systems across member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with the goal of enhancing energy security, expanding renewable energy, and promoting economic integration.
Garin acknowledged that achieving the APG would not be easy, as it requires harmonized policies, aligned regulations and innovative financing structures.
