Customs files smuggling charges vs. Discayas over 28 luxury cars

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has filed smuggling and tax evasion charges against contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya for unlawfully possessing 28 luxury vehicles.

In a statement, the BOC said it seized the vehicles linked to the Discaya family, with several found to have been smuggled into the country without proper documentation.

Eight luxury cars in the agency’s custody were discovered to have been imported without corresponding entries, classifying them as smuggled and subject to seizure and detention.

Seven other vehicles, while covered by import entries, were found to lack Certificates of Payment and showed deficiencies in duties and taxes. The BOC is verifying importation records and assessing liabilities for the seized vehicles.

The agency said the case is part of a broader crackdown on smuggling and corruption, particularly amid scrutiny of the Discaya family’s involvement in government-funded flood control projects.

“Our job at the BOC never stops with just seizures,” Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said. “We want the public to know that we are serious about the responsibilities entrusted to us—not only in routine operations but also in pursuing actions that will resolve longstanding anomalies that burden our people.”
