The Department of Transportation (DOTr), through the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), has requested local air carriers to provide free transport of relief goods to areas affected by the recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu.
The initiative, announced in an advisory from the CAB, aims to support ongoing humanitarian relief operations in various quake-hit areas by allocating available cargo space in the carriers’ aircraft. The transport is subject to the airlines’ safety and operational limitations, as well as their procedures.
The request follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive for all government agencies to work together and fast track the delivery of assistance to Filipinos affected by the earthquake.
Acting DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez extended his gratitude to Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and AirAsia for supporting the DOTr’s initiative.
“We thank our local airlines who are cooperating with our goal to speed up the delivery of assistance to those affected by the earthquake. Because of this, at least the suffering of our countrymen will be lessened,” Lopez said.
The advisory for local airlines will be effective immediately and will remain in force for the next 30 days, unless lifted or extended as may be necessary.
