The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday announced that the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), scheduled on October 13, will not proceed.
During a press briefing, SC spokesperson lawyer Camille Sue Mae Ting announced the High Tribunal’s decision declaring the Bangsamoro Autonomy Act (BAA) 77 unconstitutional.
BAA 77, or the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Redistricting Act of 2025, reorganizes parliamentary districts within BARMM to reallocate the seven parliamentary seats initially assigned to Sulu province.
The SC likewise declared the BAA 58 unconstitutional.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said this development brings the poll body back to square one pertaining to the conduct of the first parliamentary elections for the Bangsamoro region.
“Now it is very clear that we have no law to enforce. It’s back to zero for COMELEC. But in the meantime, the ball is in the hands of the Bangsamoro Parliament. We shall be waiting for their action and compliance,” Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said.
