Thirty senior citizens from various districts of Manila have started a seven-day Community Tour Guiding Training as part of a pioneering program by the Department of Tourism (DOT), the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) and the Intramuros Administration.
The participants, aged 60 to 79 and hailing from areas including Malate, Ermita, Paco, Santa Ana, Sampaloc and Port Area, began the course on Sept. 24, 2025 at the Centro de Turismo Intramuros.
Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco attended the seminar to express support for the initiative, stressing the importance of inclusivity in tourism.
“Under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., our vision for tourism is one that is inclusive, to ensure that the opportunities for tourism development are felt far and wide, not only across our destinations, but also across all sectors,” Frasco said.
“I have realized how important a role our senior citizens play in society, not only because of the many sacrifices and contributions they have made, but because even as seniors, they continue to contribute,” she said.
The initiative aims to boost community-based tourism (CBT), create job opportunities and improve the quality of local service for tourists. The comprehensive course covers the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence, Philippine history, guiding techniques and practical, hands-on training.
The goal is to equip the seniors to become ambassadors of heritage and inclusive tourism.
“The intention for the community tour guiding program… is not only for us to teach but for us to learn as well from you,” Frasco said.
The pilot program underscores that senior citizens, with their wisdom and experience, remain vital partners in developing the nation’s tourism narrative.
