A FILIPINO-JAPANESE doctor of physical therapy based in New York captured his third International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) 2025 World Master Jiu-Jitsu Championship at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino in Nevada recently.
Dr. Shawn Tomokazu Kato, 37, rose to the occasion in the finale by unleashing a footlock-submission maneuver against American Renmel Monzon Tiong in just under a minute to clinch the men’s roosterweight division title.
“I’m so grateful to be able to continue competing in the sport I love,” Kato said. “I hope to inspire other working professionals to pursue their dreams and know that with discipline, heart, and dedication, it’s possible to compete at the highest level.”
In the semifinal match of the roosterweight class earlier, Kato secured a hard-fought victory over another American in Martin Sandoval Jr., winning by two points to move to the championship round.
The World Master Championship, organized by the IBJJF, is considered the most prestigious event for veteran grapplers. This year’s tournament broke records, drawing more than 12,500 competitors from around the world, making it the largest in its history.
Kato grew up in Manila before moving to the USA. His latest win adds to his previous world titles in 2018 and 2024, underscoring his longevity and consistency at the highest level of competition.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Kato is a dedicated health and wellness practitioner through his work as a Physical Therapist, blending his professional expertise with his passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
His journey reflects the growing movement of professionals balancing careers with elite competition, proving that excellence in sport and life can go hand in hand.
Kato trains under the Miyao Brothers at Studio 1908 and practices under Checkmat Manila when he is visiting the Philippines.
